Chasing History: The Golden Boys

f you’re an NBA fan or just a Basketball fan in general then you must know the name Stephen Curry. If you’re unfamiliar he plays on the Golden State Warriors and arguably one of the greatest shooters the league has seen. He currently holds the record for the most consecutive games with a 3 pointer made which is 127 games straight. The Warriors also won the championship last year and have outperformed remarkably this year.

The Warriors currently hold the best record in the league at (52-5) in 57 games played thus far. The best record in league history was Michael Jordan’s 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team that ended up (72-10) while also winning the trophy that same year. So with that in mind, I decided to pose a question. Can these Warriors break the Bulls record this year?

“I think the Warriors can break the Chicago Bulls record, the season is almost over. They just have to keep on playing the way that they are right now and they will get through it. But if they don’t play as a team they’ll have a chance of not breaking the record. So all they have to do is play as a team and keep on winning. I’m pretty sure they can beat that Bulls team too,” stated senior Robert Veloz.
During the 95-96 season, Jordan averaged 30.4 points per game along with 6.6 rebounds per game and 4.3 assists per game. This year Curry is currently averaging 30 ppg along with 5.3 rpg and 6.6 apg.

Two interesting facts I saw were that through 57 games the Warriors are 52-5 and the Bulls were 51-6 so it is very possible. The other interesting fact was the Chicago Bulls opponent on the night of their 57th game in 1996: The Golden State Warriors. “Yes, I do think they can do it, it just all falls on Curry since he just needs to hold his team just like MJ did.  If he gets injured, Golden State would be in huge trouble,” said junior Steven Batshoun. With the way Curry and the team have been playing this year they are looking more and more like the team to dethrone the Bulls from the top.

Golden State’s best 3 players or otherwise known as their big 3 includes Curry, best shooter and best player in the game of basketball right now. Klay Thompson, whose father Mychal played for the Los Angeles Lakers back in the day and Klay is also a great shooter but a better defender. And last is Draymond Green, versatile big man who can shoot 3’s, defend, rebound, and facilitate. The 95-96 Bulls big 3 consisted of Michael Jordan, G.OA.T, Scottie Pippen, scrapper defender, 2nd scoring option and had a nice mini afro going for him. The last is the notorious Dennis Rodman, bruiser, trash talker, rebounder and crazy with his hair too, (Rodman is most notably known as Kim-Jung-Un’s favorite American Citizen.)

“Yes, I do think that will break the record. Curry’s work ethic is like no other, Draymond Green is unstoppable and Klay is the best spot up shooter in the game right now. They also have the best depth in the league. I also believe that they can beat the Bulls too,” explained senior and VP varsity Basketball player Anthoni Avila. Golden State is seeking its second consecutive Larry O’Brien Trophy this June. Another interesting fact was that Golden State was without their Head Coach Steve Kerr, who was on the 95-96 Bulls team, for the first few months of the season dealing with back surgery complications. Assistant Coach Luke Walton led the Warriors to a 24-0 start to the season before losing to the Milwaukee Bucks on December 12, 2015. Walton led the Warriors to a 39-4 record before Kerr came back.  “Yes, because the Warriors have the best player in the NBA in Steph Curry and have the most complete team but I don’t think they can beat Jordan’s Bulls,” said junior Ben Litman. With June a couple of months away the Warriors have the chance to be one of the greatest teams of all time.
